How To: Allow DCC and Identd through the Windows XP Firewall
This tutorial only applies to Windows XP Service Pack 2
For mIRC to be able to respond to Identd and DCC requests with the Windows XP Firewall
enabled it must be added to the "Exceptions" list in Windows.
When you first attempt to initate a DCC transfer or connect to an IRC server with
Identd enabled this window should appear:
If it does, click "Unblock" and mIRC will be added to the Exceptions list. If you
continue to have problems scroll to the end of this tutorial for other suggestions.
To manually add mIRC to the Exceptions list we must navigate to the Control Panel
and from there add mIRC to the Exception list.
Open the Start menu and select "Control Panel" from the right-hand column.
When the Control Panel opens select "Switch to Classic View" from the left-hand
menu.
Now double-click the "Windows Firewall" icon.
The following window should appear. Ensure that the Windows Firewall is on and that
exceptions ARE allowed.
Now go to the Exceptions tab.
The list of Exceptions should appear. If mIRC is in the list ensure that the box
next to it is ticked. If you have multiple installations of mIRC you may wish to
check which one it is referring to by double-clicking the name.
If mIRC is in the list and ticked then click OK. If you continue to have problems
scroll to the end of the tutorial for other helpful resources.
If mIRC is not in the list click "Add Program".
Here you can add programs found in your Start Menu to the Exception list. If you
can't find mIRC in the list then select "Browse" and locate the mIRC executable
manually.
mIRC should now appear in the exceptions list. Ensure it is ticked and press "OK"
to confirm the changes.
If you still have problems with Identd or DCC
Many internet connections come with routers and modems that can interfere with Identd/DCC.
If this is the case you may need to use your device's "Port Forwarding" or "Virtual
Server" settings to forward incoming connections from the router to your PC. Detailed
instructions for doing this may be found on
www.portforward.com
Other security software can also interfere with IRC-related programs. If you are
running such software (for example ZoneAlarm or Norton Internet Security) you may
wish to search Google for instructions on how
to configure them.
Finally, some ISPs (Internet Service Providers) firewall their customers, who must
request for the firewall to be removed. Again, searching
Google or your ISP's website should help you
determine if this is the case and how to fix it.
If you have further problems you can always come to
#mIRC on DALnet for help!
